Mike and Crazy Girl

Mike and his little “Cray Cray” are a remarkable combo. Our team met Mike and his dachshund Crazy Girl in San Diego, California.

Mike had been experiencing homelessness for nearly two years, living in a tent along the beach while battling colon cancer. When Dr. Kwane approached Mike, he was so excited to talk about his little girl and told us more about their story.

Mike explained that Crazy Girl loved hunting in the bushes, and he thought her eyes may have been scratched a few months prior. Her eyes had been irritated and getting cloudy. Dr. Kwane examined Crazy Girl, who was in great shape, but did seem like she was blind. Mike told our team that he loves her so much, that he would cure her of her blindness before he would cure himself of his cancer – she is his motivation every day.

After hearing their story, Dr. Kwane was determined to see if there was any hope to possibly get Crazy Girl’s eyesight back, and we were able to set a visit with a local veterinary ophthalmologist. After several tests and some anxious moments, it was unfortunately discovered that Crazy Girl’s vision could not be restored possibly due to an abnormality with her eye drainage since birth.

Although Crazy Girl’s eyesight couldn’t be restored, Project Street Vet was able to get her the right medication she needed to stay comfortable and provide Mike with a piece of mind. Dogs are unbelievably resilient and Crazy Girl was still enjoying life with Mike by her side.
