Kathleen and Darla

Darla is a 10-year-old Shih Tzu cared for deeply by her mom Kathleen, who has had her since she was born. They have been inseparable ever since! Kathleen heard about Project Street Vet through her case worker at PATH, an organization that provides financial assistance and short-term case management services to assist individuals who are homeless with obtaining permanent housing. PATH and Kathleen were seeking assistance for Darla, who had a rapidly growing mass near her abdominal area that seemed to be larger by the day. While on the phone with Kathleen, we could hear the concern and love she has for her fur baby. She stated, “She is like my daughter and I love her with all my heart. I don't know what I would do without her. She is the sweetest dog I have ever known and my best friend. Darla goes everywhere with me, and she is the only reason I am still alive today.”

Kathleen wanted to do whatever she could to help Darla live the healthiest life possible and knows the importance of veterinary care, but access to affordable care has been a struggle. After hearing their story, the team at Project Street Vet wanted to help through our financial assistance program, where the cost of veterinary care is sponsored by Project Street Vet for qualified cases.

Darla and Kathleen were referred to B Street Veterinary Hospital, a partner hospital of Project Street Vet. After an exam and some work-up tests, it was determined that Darla would benefit from a mass removal and spay surgery and would be a good candidate for this treatment. Thanks to a grant from Grey Muzzle Organization, Project Street Vet was able to help Darla get the needed surgeries done to help her return to her life with Kathleen.

After receiving the help, Kathleen shared, “I am forever grateful to PSV for funding Darla’s surgery. She had a massive tumor encroaching on her genital area and they paid for her surgery and recovery. My beautiful dog is doing great now, and this is all thanks to PSV.” A huge thanks to the amazing Grey Muzzle Organization! As a result of being one of their chosen organizations to receive a grant, we were able to help Darla with her surgery.
